Deep in the forests of Southern Africa, big watermelons grow wild and kissed by the sun, since times immemorial; the delicious fruits are known to have been enjoyed by humans for at least 5 millenias; in the Nile Valley, the ancient Egyptians cultivated the giant sweet watermelons and it seems that even emperor Tutankhamun enjoyed. The history of the watermelon, however, is maybe less tied to kings and queens, and more to hope and a flicker of joy in sad and difficult times. The Bible mention watermelons as food for the ancient Israelites in bondage in Egypt; and Vietnamese tales speak of heroes in exile who learned how to grow the sweet fruits for themselves. They used to say that when life throws lemons your way, the wisest choice would be to use them to make lemonade; if tradition is to be believed, as we can see, a dash of Watermelon Flavored Italian Soda Syrup is always a nice addition. An ancient Vietnamese tale tells the story of An Tiem; a young orphaned boy adopted by a king, who eventually ended-up marrying his daughter. Disgruntled by malevolent rumours that the two were plotting to take his throne, the king decided, with a heavy heart, to send them in exile on a deserted, desolated island- where they would be left to fend for themselves. One day as An Tiem walked along the beach, he noticed strange yellow sea birds among the rocks, pecking at some black seeds on the sand. He decided to plant them- and soon enough big, green fruits with a red interior developed- tasting fresh and sweet. The two of them sat on the beach and enjoyed a few slices- as the birds were crying in the evening air: "Tay qua; Tay qua."- which in Vietnamese means water melon- and thus the fruit gained its name. An Tiem wrote his name on a watermelon, which the sea waves carried to the king; and the king, seeing the miracle, sent back for his daughter and son in law and they were soon reunited. The moral of the story would be that in the face of hardship, you've got to keep not just your hope, but also your resourcefulness; and you will be rewarded. So, if you go through life's challenges with a smile on your face and a creative mind, just like An Tiem and his wife, reward yourself with a big glass of Watermelon Flavored Italian Soda Syrup; and learn resourcefulness by putting the bottle of pure deliciousness to as many uses as you can think of- care for some Watermelon Flavored Italian Soda Syrup, for example?
