Cotton candy-- where memories are spun on a cone! Contrary to popular belief, Cotton Candy did not originate in America, It actually originated in the city of Yazd, in central Iran. During the 15th century, Cotton Candy became popular in Italy. Over time, it became entwined with the cultures that embraced it as the manufacturing process evolved and allowed it to be mass-produced. Cotton Candy has been called different names throughout the world. In Europe, it is known as Candee Floss or Candy Floss. In America, it used to be referred to as spun sugar, until the 1920's when Cotton Candy became the name it goes by today. It is widely said the process of making Cotton Candy was invented by four men. In actuality, what they invented were processes and machines for making the fun treat. Josef Delarose Lascaux, John C. Wharton, Thomas Patton, and William Morrison were all instrumental in commercializing multi-colored Cotton Candy. In 1899, Morrison and Wharton were able to patent the first electric cotton candy machine, which utilized centrifugal force to spin and melt sugar through small holes. In 1904, they introduced it to the St. Louis World Fair where it was a huge success. The inventors brought in around $17,000...a lot of money then, and now! Patton obtained a patent for his invention in 1900, and introduced his version to the Ringley Bros. Circus. It turned out to be a great business decision. And finally, Dentist Josef Lascaux, although never receiving a patent, introduced the popular treat in his dental office. In the 18th and 19th centuries, cotton candy had a huge sweep of popularity in Europe. Confectioners were pressed to create special spun sugar Easter eggs that were purchased just about as soon as they were produced.
